MOUNTAIN/ AIRPORT PROJECT UPDATE: Now that we have all of our mountains, trees and planes included in the mountain scene, it is time to do some animation.

  1. For this part of the project, review the VIDEO TUTORIAL: 3DS Max: IMPORTING and ANIMATING ALONG A PATH (also available in the Q: Drive Folder). We used this in Chapter 9 to animate your spaceship flying around your planet.
  2. You will need probably need to resize and move your AIRPLANE to be at the head of your runway in your airport. Make sure that your plane is the proper size to fit on your runway. It should be WAY smaller than the buildings and landscape elements in your scene. If your plane is taller than the trees you created, there is an issue!
  3. NEED TO ADJUST YOUR ZOOM SCROLL TO CREATE YOUR AIRPORT PROPERLY?
    • Click CUSTOMIZE>CUSTOMIZE USER INTERFACE.
    • Click on the TAB at the top of the DIALOG BOX for MOUSE.
    • ADJUST THE "WHEEL ZOOM INCREMENT" to be a smaller number. I have found that 0.5 - 0.6 works best for the airport project.
    • Click SAVE...
    • A SAVE window will open, simply click SAVE to save this into your new start settings. DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE, if you don't know what you are doing...
  4. Then, create a LINE by using the CREATE>SHAPES>LINE tool. Start at the top of your runway. Have this LINE move along your runway, then in and around your mountains, eventually returning to end where it began.
  5. While in the MODIFY tab, click on VERTEX in the selection area. Highlight your vertices of your LINE and RIGHT CLICK>SMOOTH. You can either do this one at a time or all together.
  6. ADJUST AND MOVE your vertices of your LINE to guide your plane down your runway, up into the air and through the mountains of your LANDSCAPE. If you need additional vertices, you can create these by highlighting the SEGMENT button in the MODIFY window and then RIGHT CLICKING on a SEGMENT and clicking on DIVIDE.
  7. Then, attach your AIRPLANE CONTAINER to the path that you created, using the techniques outlined in the video. (Here is the information on CONTAINERS from 4/16- GROUPING- AFTER ANIMATING THE PROPELLOR, select all of the pieces of your plane (including the new wheels. be careful to get ALL PLANE pieces and NOTHING else from your landscape!) and click TOOLS>CONTAINERS>CREATE CONTAINER FROM SELECTION. This will "group" all of your plane pieces into a container (CALLED CONTAINER001 in your layer stack). Use this CONTAINER as the object that you will use to animate your plane along a path in your mountains.
  8. Adjust the banking and following, as necessary, just as you did with your SPACESHIP and PLANET in Chapter 9.
  9. SAVE the file back to your CHALLENGE folder when you are done.
  10. We will have one more segment to this project before it is graded, probably this week.

THE CHAPTER 12 BELLRINGER: This worked so well yesterday, I would like to do it again today with Chapter 12. Please review the video for Chapter 12 on the Q: Drive (or use the book, if you wish).

  1. Review the video for Chapter 12.
  2. THEN, using any 3DS Max scene that you have created so far that uses MATERIALS, create an IMAGE FILE and SAVE your IMAGE as a .JPG to your Chapter 12 Folder as IMAGE.jpg.
  3. SAVE one of your ANIMATIONS that you have created so far as an .AVI file. Put it in your Chapter 12 folder, called ANIMATION.avi.
  4. OPEN your animation of your SPACESHIP flying around your PLANET. Add a CAMERA and animate it to show your scene and your animation in an interesting way. THEN, set your workspace view to CAMERA and RENDER your animation as an AVI file. Save this to your Chapter 12 folder, call it SPACESHIP.avi.
  5. Now complete the short Chapter 12 quiz, you are done with Chapter 12.

WORK DAY: After you have completed your Chapter 12 Bellringer, work on the following:

  1. Mr. B.'s Cafe Sign Materials and Animation Challenge: This needs to be completed by next TUESDAY.
  2. The MOUNTAIN/AIRPORT CHALLENGE: You should have completed the Mountains, the Airport, the Trees and the Plane. Your plane should have a rotating propellor and COLORS.

THE CHAPTER 11 BELLRINGER:

  1. RIGHT CLICK> SAVE this CITY_SCENE to your CHAPTER_11 Folder.
  2. Review the two video tutorials for CHAPTER 11- VID_11-1 and VID_11-2 from the Q: Drive Video Tutorial Folder. Create the camera animation of the city, as in the video. Try to include the lense change information, as best you can, to create the most interesting camera animation.
  3. PLEASE NOTE: Our new version of 3DS Max adds a third camera type- the Physical Camera. This is used for photo-realistic movie scenes. For now, don't worry about this and focus on the TARGET and FREE CAMERAS instead.
  4. Save your competed CITY CAMERA SCENE to your CHAPTER 11 folder, call it CITY_SCENE_CAMERA.max.
  5. THEN, using any 3DS Max object you have created so far, such as your planet/spaceship animation or your snowman, make a moving camera view animation of that object. SAVE your animation to your Chapter 11 Folder as CAMERA_ANIMATION.
  6. Now complete the short Chapter 11 Quiz, you are done with Chapter 11!

It sounded like most students still had to work on the PLANE part of the MOUNTAIN/AIRPORT PROJECT yesterday. Please work on completing all of the steps below today, if you can.

PART ONE: OPENING AND IMPORTING

TO START- Right-click and SAVE this file to your CHALLENGE folder, it is a 3DS Max scene of a Propeller Plane, this will be the subject of your animation. DO NOT OPEN IT!

IMPORTING- OPEN your recently created MOUNTAIN AIRPORT scene. From that scene, click IMPORT>MERGE from the MAX main menu in the upper left corner. Locate your PROP_PLANE file in your CHALLENGE FOLDER from above. CLICK IT and OPEN IT. In the resulting MERGE WINDOW, click the ALL BUTTON in the lower left, under the listing of the plane file layers. Then click OK. Your new plane will be inserted into the middle of your scene, with all layers highlighted. IMMEDIATELY MOVE YOUR PLANE OFF TO THE SIDE, so that you can work on it!

PART TWO: MODELLING

WHEELS- ZOOM in on your new plane. Currently, your plane has a fuselage, rudder, cockpit, wings and propeller, but no wheels. As we will be animating this to take off and fly from your Mountain Aiport, it would be nice if your plane had some wheels. Do some online research by Googling "SMALL PROP PLANE" images, so that you can see what wheels on a small plane look like. Use your modelling skills to add some wheels to your plane.

RUDDER/ TAILFIN- Wow! The rudder/ tailfin of this plane is a little crooked from behind! Maybe you could fix it?

PART THREE: COLOR AND MATERIALS

COLORS- The parts of your prop plane are all separate and are currently black. Please decorate your plane in any fashion that you wish. Please use some advanced MATERIALS to make your plane interesting and fun (feel free to decorate your plane in the flag of your favorite country or in the patterns of your favorite Mario character, etc.) Make sure to color all pieces of your plane- the propellors, wings, canopy, fuselage/tail, wheels, etc.

PART FOUR: ANIMATION

THE PROPELLOR- ZOOM in on the front of your plane and ANIMATE THE PROPELLOR TO BE ROTATING. Make sure that the PROPELLOR is turning quickly by rotating the propellor 1440 or 2880 degrees (I recommend clicking on the ANGLE SNAP TOGGLE button on your toolbar when you do this.) So that your propellor does not start and stop when rotating, make sure that in the CURVE EDITOR, the Rotation of the propellor is a STRAIGHT DIAGONAL LINE.)

PART FIVE: SAVING

GROUPING- AFTER ANIMATING THE PROPELLOR, select all of the pieces of your plane (including the new wheels) and click TOOLS>CONTAINERS>CREATE CONTAINER FROM SELECTION. This will "group" all of your plane pieces into a container (CALLED CONTAINER001 in your layer stack) that you will use to animate your plane along a path in your mountains.

SAVING- When you have finished this part of the project, save your scene back into your CHALLENGE folder. We will animate its flight later, using the same technique that we used with our SPACESHIP in Chapter 9.

I recommend trying to create the building of the windmill using an EXTENDED PRIMITIVE>GENGON and use EXTRUDE, VERTEX MANIPULATION and other tools. This is a tough model to recreate, so it does not have to be exact, ADAPT AS YOU NEED TO include all of the elements when complete.

BELLRINGER: Yay! It is time for another part of the MOUNTAIN/AIRPORT Project- "The Airplane"! For this part of the project, we will be modelling, coloring and animating an airplane, which will eventually fly around your mountain landscape scene.

BELLRINGER #1: Mr. B. needs to get his grading completed! Before you leave today, please EMAIL me any work from CHAPTER 9 and 10 that you have available.  You also need to make sure that all QUIZZES for Chapters 9 and 10 are also completed. I need to have these graded before the end of this week. this week.

BELLRINGER #2: The other day, you all worked on the MOUNTAIN AIRPORT CHALLENGE by completing the "3DS Max Mountains Tutorial." A number of you may still be working on putting this scene (including your airport) together. For today, our Bellringer is to add some more personality to your AIRPORT.

TREES in 3DS Max, Mini-tutorial- Actually, putting realistic trees into a 3DS Max scene is quite easy (many of you did this in the past in the MODIFY CHAPTER.):

  1. Open a new scene and put in a PLANE Primitive Object.
  2. From the CREATE panel, pull down the menu that says STANDARD PRIMITIVES and select the menu option called AEC EXTENDED.
  3. Select FOLIAGE.
  4. You will now have 12-15 different TREE options to select from. Simply DOUBLE CLICK on a tree option to create a tree.
  5. Click over to the MODIFY TAB and you will find parameters for sizing and shaping your tree. You can also set your tree to have leaves, fruit, density, pruning, etc. Experiment!
  6. PLEASE NOTE: Because of the very complicated algorithms that are being used to create all of your leaves in your tree, you will probably only see a "cloud" shape where your leaves are in your tree in the workspace. If you RENDER (SHIFT-Q or F10 for Render Setup) your scene, you will see your tree in a realistic rendering.
  7. You can also add walls and railings from the AEC Extended menu, should you be interested.
  8. INCORPORATE INTO YOUR MOUNTAIN SCENE: ONCE you are familiar with trees and how to make them, head over to your MOUNTAIN/ AIRPORT scene from yesterday and insert trees around your buildings and up into your mountains. Use RIGHT CLICK>CLONE to create more, as needed. SAVE your MOUNTAIN scene back to your CHALLENGE FOLDER.

NEED TO ADJUST YOUR ZOOM SCROLL TO CREATE YOUR AIRPORT PROPERLY?

  1. Click CUSTOMIZE>CUSTOMIZE USER INTERFACE.
  2. Click on the TAB at the top of the DIALOG BOX for MOUSE.
  3. ADJUST THE "WHEEL ZOOM INCREMENT" to be a smaller number. I have found that 0.5 - 0.6 works best for the airport project.
  4. Click SAVE...
  5. A SAVE window will open, simply click SAVE to save this into your new start settings. DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE, if you don't know what you are doing...

BELLRINGER: The MOUNTAIN AIRPORT CHALLENGE- Mr. B. spent a few hours putting this tutorial together for you, so let's make a cool MOUNTAIN SCENE. Complete the "3DS Max Mountains Tutorial." BELLRINGER: CHAPTER 8, PART TWO. Review the following video tutorial- 3DS Max: Using Materials with Sub-objects (also found in the Q: Drive Chapter 8 folder in a file called multi_sub_object_materials.mp4). Recreate the 2 spheres from the video, complete with your own GRASS/ STONE and CLOUDS materials (include the TRANSPARENCY) as outlined in the video, save this file to your CHAPTER 8 folder, call it SUBOBJECT_MATERIALS.max.

Then, open your SPACESHIP, FUTURE_PLANET and PUSHPIN FILES from your Chapter 7 and CHALLENGE folders. Apply SUBOBJECT MATERIALS to each of these figures. 1- CAR CRASH- Animate the Car Race to include a CRASH of two or more cars. CHALLENGE PROBLEM: Include a JUMP in the middle of the race. Super Bonus points for inclusion of a lava pit.

2- Animated 3D name, using PIVOT POINTS. The individual letters of your name should start "off screen," then animate to come together to form your name. See the 3D Letters Video in the 3 MINUTE TUTORIAL folder for instructions on how to make letters.

3- Animate your SPACESHIP to be flying through or around your FUTURE PLANET. BONUS POINTS if your ship actually flies BETWEEN buildings! Mr. B. will be putting out an EXPORT video to help you put these figures in the same scene. Then, REFER to the ANIMATE ALONG A PATH video tutorial in the 3 Minute Videos folder for this!

MIDTERM EXAMINATION- Create and animate the blades of this WINDMILL CHALLENGE problem to be turning. Properly setting the PIVOT POINT will be key here. Include MATERIALS to give the Windmill colors and textures.

BELLRINGER: CHAPTER 8, PART ONE. Review the following video tutorial- 3DS Max: Material Basics (also found in the Q: Drive Chapter 8 folder in a file called MATERIAL_BASICS.mp4). Recreate the tabletop and four spheres as outlined in the video, save it to your CHAPTER 8 folder, call it SPHERES (get your own .JPG image for the BITMAP SPHERE or use THIS HHS LOGO FILE).

Then, open your CHESS PIECE that we created last week. Using your 3DS Max skills, create a tabletop under your chess piece. Use WOOD MATERIAL (or another material, if you are feeling creative) to add color and texture to your CHESS PIECE and an alternate color to the table top. Save this file to your CHAPTER 8 folder and call it CHESS_BOARD.

WORK DAY: After completing PART ONE of CHAPTER 8, students should be working on the ANIMATION of Chapter 9.

BELLRINGER: It's CHALLENGE DAY! Please complete the "Push Pin Challenge" to the best of your ability. Please create this figure by working with a single primitive (possibly a CYLINDER, maybe a HEMISPHERE). Mr. B. will also be grading this, as usual, so please give strong effort!

WORK DAY: All students should be working on the 3D MODELING of Chapter 7 or the ANIMATION OF Chapter 9.
