BELLRINGER: A CHALLENGE TUTORIAL! PLEASE REVIEW THE TUTORIAL BELOW, THEN INCORPORATE IT INTO YOUR MOUNTAIN/ AIRPORT SCENE. You can also bring up the video at this link to be resizable!:

I recommend practicing this technique with your TEXTURED_BOXES scene, created in Chapter 8, so that you are familiar with the techniques involved.

Please note that this is a challenge tutorial. I expect all students to attempt this, ESPECIALLY CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT STUDENTS. To be able to use this in your Mountain scene, you will need to be experimental and adjust settings to be able to achieve the best result. In addition, the tutorial is quick, without audio, so you will need to rewind a number of times to catch everything. DO IT!

The presenter also likes to use the TEAPOT icon to do a quick render of his scene on the fly. You can do the same, it should be in your tool bar, just down from the CURVE EDITOR icon.

Another note: Partway into the video, the presenter clicks an icon in the lower right of the screen to bring up VIEWPORT CONFIGURATION. My layout of 3DS Max did not have that button, yours may not either. You can achieve the SAME RESULT by clicking VIEWS>VIEWPORT CONFIGURATION.

I have uploaded a CLOUDY SKY image for your use, if you need it. You can save it to your PLANE folder, so that it can be found by 3DS Max in your MOUNTAIN SCENE.

BELLRINGER: It is "Moving People" Time! Yay! Please review the 3DS_MAX_POPULATE video tutorial in the 3 minute folder. Follow along and create your own crowd of moving people in a scene! NOTE: You will need to zoom way out in your viewport for this to work properly, as people are actually pretty big.For this new animation, SAVE AS populate.max in your CHALLENGE Folder.

Practice and play with this technique a little, then open your AIRPORT in the MOUNTAINS model and place some people moving about near your airport.

You will need to make your people much, much smaller to fit into your scene. Check out the very short video at this link. To bring up the MAXScript Listener, click on SCRIPTING>MAXScript Listener or simply hit the F11 key. Then, type in "pop.realworldscale = 1". You can then change this number up or down and reSIMULATE to see your bigger/smaller people!

BELLRINGER: TREES in 3DS Max, Mini-tutorial- Actually, putting realistic trees into a 3DS Max scene is quite easy:

  1. Open a new scene and put in a PLANE Primitive Object.
  2. Use the HAIR and FUR Modifier to add some grass, as we did back in Chapter 5 for your first attempt at a tree.
  3. From the CREATE panel, pull down the menu that says STANDARD PRIMITIVES and select the menu option called AEC EXTENDED.
  4. Select FOLIAGE.
  5. You will now have 12-15 different TREE options to select from. Simply DOUBLE CLICK on a tree option to create a tree.
  6. Click over to the MODIFY TAB and you will find parameters for sizing and shaping your tree. You can also set your tree to have leaves, fruit, density, pruning, etc. Experiment!
  7. PLEASE NOTE: Because of the very complicated algorithms that are being used to create all of your leaves in your tree, you will probably only see a "cloud" shape where your leaves are in your tree in the workspace. If you RENDER (F10) your scene, you will see your tree in a realistic rendering.
  8. You can also add walls and railings from the AEC Extended menu, should you be interested.
  9. ONCE you are familiar with trees and how to make them, head over to your MOUNTAIN/ AIRPORT scene and insert a few trees around your buildings. Use RIGHT CLICK>CLONE to create more, as needed. SAVE your MOUNTAIN scene back to your PLANE FOLDER.

BELLRINGER: Yay! It is time for a Bellringer Mini-Project- "The Airplane"! For this multi-day project, we will be animating an airplane to fly about a landscape scene. Along the way, we will learn how to animate along a path, create mountain landscapes and trees and populate an area with animated crowds of people.

TO START: Make yourself a folder in your network space called PLANE. Right-click and SAVE to that folder, then OPEN this 3DS Max file of a Propeller Plane, this will be the subject of your animation.

PART ONE:

The Propeller- Zoom in on the plane and ANIMATE THE PROPELLER TO BE ROTATING. Make sure that the PROPELLER to turn quickly and not stop and start again by rotating the prop 1440 degrees and making sure that in the CURVE EDITOR, the Y Rotation of the propeller is a STRAIGHT DIAGONAL LINE.)

AFTER ANIMATING THE PROPELLER, select all of the pieces of your plane and click TOOLS>CONTAINERS>CREATE CONTAINER FROM SELECTION. This will "group" all of your plane pieces into a container that you can now animate along a path.

When you have finished this part of the project, save the plane with the rotating propeller to your PLANE folder.

RULES FOR CHAPTER COMPLETION:

  1. Create a CHAPTER_# folder on your U: DRIVE FOLDER for each chapter that you complete. Save ALL of your work and practice files to this folder as you go.

BELLRINGER: It's THURSDAY! Yay! Why don't we WATCH MOVIES! Mr. B. presents one of his FAVORITE 3DS Max Animated Short Films today: "Ascension." We also complete the "Ascension Thinking Sheet."

ALSO: If you did not complete the "Three Minute Tutorials- DICE" last class period, do so today. Instructions are below.

BEFORE YOU START- Make sure that your units are set to CENTIMETERS! If you have yours set to millimeters, the smoothing may not work properly for this project!

This tutorial is a little more complicated than the BOWL we did awhile back, but might be very useful in our modeling. Please watch the DICE video in the Q: Drive QUICK_TUTORIALS folder. It goes quickly, so you might have to stop and rewind on occassion to see everything.

When you have completed your DIE, copy it, so that you have two. Then put down a PLANE underneath your two dice. Apply MATERIALS to your scene so that your dice are one color (use interesting materials, if you wish) and the dots on the dice (called "pips") are a different color. Now, make the plane another material (a mirror material would be cool, maybe...) When you are done with this scene, run the RENDER from the F10 key to see how your scene looks! Oh, and... Don't forget to answer the questions on The "3 Minute Tutorial: DICE" Thinking Sheet.

RULES FOR CHAPTER COMPLETION:

  1. Create a CHAPTER_# folder on your U: DRIVE FOLDER for each chapter that you complete. Save ALL of your work and practice files to this folder as you go.

BELLRINGER (continued from Friday): It's TEST TIME! YAY! Complete the WINDMILL CHALLENGE by replicating the model at this link. I recommend trying to create the BLADES of the Windmill first, using ARRAY tools, similar to the spinner design. KEEP TRACK OF THE SIZES FOR YOUR BLADES! Then, start creating the building of the windmill using an EXTENDED PRIMITIVE>GENGON and use EXTRUDE and other tools. You are allowed to ADD Primitives to your model, as needed, but keep these to a minimum.

This is a tough model to recreate, so it does not have to be exact, ADAPT AS YOU NEED TO include all of the elements when complete. SAVE your final product in your CHALLENGE folder. You will have until the end of class TODAY to complete this TEST. Mr. B. will be grading this during our Block Period on Thursday.

BELLRINGER: We work on the first of our "Three Minute Tutorials," designed to teach us some new techniques in 3DS Max that will help with our modeling.

This tutorial is relatively quick and easy, but should give us a whole new toolbox of tricks that might help us with future designs. Please watch the BOWL video in the Q: Drive QUICK_TUTORIALS folder, practice the technique and answer the questions on The "3 Minute Tutorial #1: THE BOWL" Thinking Sheet.

BONUS ACTIVITY: We will be watching a short 3DS Max animated film: "Destiny."
