Media Productions Project 3- "The Atmospheric Video"

Premise:

We have recently been working on the 6 different most useful camera angles and the Top SIX Video Rules for Videography, as well as use of sound in video. In Sony Vegas, students will be learning how to incorporate Video Special Effects for this project. This short film will be an exercise in putting all of these things together.

Your Inspiration for this Project: Watch the following video clip (also found on the V: Drive Resource Folder)-

Eclectic 3.0, an Atmospheric Video

You will be creating a similar video, using a sound clip of your choice from below and filming an environment that is familiar to you, be it your house, the prairie, the school, the gym, whatever. Your video will demonstrate the theme of the music and match that music with the feeling and emotions of your environmental video. You can look at this as an "ATMOSPHERIC" video or as an "ABSTRACT/SPECIAL EFFECTS" video, either one would be appropriate for the project.

A NOTE ABOUT LOCATION: If you have not created footage by the second day of the project, please use THE CAMPUS for your environment. There is plenty of stuff around the school that you can film. Once you put in your special effects, it will look very exciting and interesting. DO NOT SIT AROUND DOING NOTHING SAYING THAT YOU CAN'T FILM!

The Music:

There are a total of almost 20 different music and audio clips below from which to choose. No two can be used by the same student! Listen to the unclaimed music and select one that invokes some visual imagery for you.

Here are the music samples:

When you have decided on your music, report your decision to Mr. B. No two people can have the same music and it is “First Come, First Serve.”

PLACING YOUR MUSIC IN VEGAS: To save your music file from the list above, just RIGHT CLICK> SAVE LINK and save the file to your project folder. Then, simply IMPORT the file into Vegas, the same way that you do with a movie clip. You will then place that file onto your MUSIC layer, in the same way that you place video into VIDEO layers.

Preparations:

Spend some time listening to your music. Try closing your eyes and picturing what kind of environment comes into your head when you hear your music. Start coming up with some ideas for what kind of video you will put together, what happens at the start of the music, what happens when the music changes tempo, etc. Be able to run the entire 30-60 second movie through your mind.

Producing Your Video: You must use AT LEAST TWENTY different clips (preferably many more) and scenes in your video. You can show them in sequence, you can cut them all up and put them back together again, whatever works for your video.

For this assignment, I highly recommend NO DIALOGUE! MINIMAL ACTING!

PLEASE remember the SIX Rules of Videography when planning your video! Don't give shot after shot of Shoulder Camera Work! Get dirty on this one....

Video Tutorials: One of the important parts of this assignment is the use of sound and transitions and visual special effects to enhance the feeling of your video. Here is a link to the Video Tutorial that shows how Video Special Effects are used in Sony Vegas:

Please use Transitions and Special Effects to add to the look and feel of your film as much as possible. It is a requirement that you use at LEAST THREE different visual special effects. Be careful that your Special Effects ADD to your film, not become the ONLY THING INTERESTING in your film.

Make sure to include a Title and credits, where you acknowledge the writers, the film crew, the editors and any actors that you may have used.

Make sure to MAKE MOVIE… when you are all done and copy the Movie file to the DROPBOX on the Q: Drive.

Grading:

I will be grading this as follows:

  • 50 points for the use of Video Special Effects and the matching of the music to the theme of your film.
  • 50 points for "Little Things", such as proper Titling and Credits, smooth transitions, use of the TOP SIX RULES, etc.
