Graphic Design Visual Communication Challenge: "The Typography Triathalon, STAGE ONE"

PROJECT: Students have been working on Typographic exercises throughout the year. The time has come to put all of your Typography skills to the test in a final Typography Challenge: "The Typography Triathalon!"

BEFORE YOU START: Using YOUIDRAW from GOOGLE DRIVE, create a new drawing. SAVE THIS DRAWING AS TRIATHALON_PART_ONE. You will be making TEN DIFFERENT TYPOGRAPHICAL IMAGES ON THIS DRAWING. At the end of this part of the project, you will SHARE THIS FILE with MR. B.!

A WARNING: Please make sure that you read the instructions for each leg of the challenge very thoroughly! You will be disqualified for any rules infractions!

THE PARTS: There will be THREE PARTS to this challenge, we will be taking them ONE PART AT A TIME for now, so we don't get overwhelmed with our ONLINE PROJECT.

FONTS: For this project, you are allowed to use ANY font that you wish from YOUIDRAW. They have LOTS. PLEASE DO NOT USE A CRAZY FONT, THOUGH, let your typography speak for itself, don't rely on the font to do the work for you!

Please note that you can use BOLD or ITALIC versions of the font sets, as well as limited use of numbers and symbols. You are allowed to do some minor "modifications" to your letters, if you wish, similar to those in the "Clever Typography Thinking Sheet."

BREAKING WORDS INTO LETTERS: In ILLUSTRATOR, we are able to BREAK WORDS apart in their individual letters. So far, I have been unable to find a way to do this in YOUIDRAW. You will probably need to TYPE EACH LETTER ON ITS OWN LAYER for this project. If you find a way to break words apart in this program, let me know and I will give you 25 extra credit points!

PART ONE: THE WORDS- Using only letters and numbers and typographical symbols, create a typographic representation of EACH of the 10 words below. Please create all 10 of these Solutions on your TRIATHALON_PART_1 canvas on YOUIDRAW. YOU MAY ONLY use BLACK, WHITE and GRAY letterforms. PLEASE USE THE LETTERS IN YOUR WORD ONLY ONCE. THE WORD SHOULD BE EASILY READABLE WHEN YOU ARE DONE!

To achieve the desired effect, avoid simply repeating the words or creating an outline illustration from the letterforms. The best solutions not only enhance the word’s meaning but are clever and aesthetically pleasing. See the three samples below:

Your TEN WORDS for this leg of the triathalon are:

CROWDED
WINNER
MAGNIFY
MONSTER
ANGRY
COMPUTER
CONFUSING
HIDDEN
SILLY
STARS

SUBMITTING YOUR WORK: When you are done with all 10 of your WORDS, save your drawing to your GOOGLE DRIVE and SHARE IT WITH MR. B.

GRADING: The WORDS are worth 5 points each for a total of 50 points. If you put thought and effort into your solution, you will receive 5 points for your word. If you did not complete your word, you will get ZERO points. ANYTHING ELSE? You will get 2.5 points. These words need to be submitted to Mr. B. by FRIDAY, MARCH 27th for grading.

TROUBLES OR ISSUES? If you are having any difficulties, can't use program, can't think of ideas, dog ate your computer, EMAIL MR. B., he will help!
