GRAPHIC DESIGN: "The Concert Posters"

Premise: This assignment will allow the student to demonstrate their illustrative AND typographical skills in one project.

Before you get started: You will be designing TWO concert posters for the band, artist or group of your choice. This can be anything from your favorite band playing at Red Rocks to a symphony orchestra performance, you get to choose!

The First Poster: You will be creating your poster(s) on a 8 1/2 inch WIDE by 11 inch TALL canvas in Illustrator. You will be following the rules below for the creation of your poster:

  1. Your goal is to create an EYE-CATCHING and appealing concert poster for your band.
  2. The imagery for the first poster can contain any ILLUSTRATOR generated or created media that you wish to use. You should include at least FOUR different images in the creation of your poster and you cannot use material from an already existing poster or CD.
  3. You will need to include following information on your concert poster in a typographically pleasing way: (DO NOT WRITE "ARTIST" or "TIME" or any of these words on your poster!):
    • ARTIST: The band/ artist/ group name
    • DATE: June 19th, 2021
    • TIME: 7:00 p.m.
    • LOCATION: Your choice, but make it an real venue. This can be anything from a coffee shop to Mile High Stadium.
  4. When you have completed this poster, export it as a JPEG and save it into your CONCERT_POSTER folder, call it IMAGE_POSTER.jpg.

The Second Poster: Now, you will be creating another version of the exact same poster. This time, you can ONLY use color, typography and design layout to create your work. NO IMAGES, NO ILLUSTRATIONS! This poster will also be created on a 8 1/2 inch WIDE by 11 inch TALL canvas in Illustrator and will include all of the required text from above.

When you have completed this poster, export it as a JPEG and save it into your CONCERT_POSTER folder, call it TYPOGRAPHY_POSTER.jpg.

Grading: This assignment will be worth a total of 200 points:

  • 75 POINTS for the proper creation of Poster ONE, will all elements included.
  • 75 POINTS for the proper creation of Poster TWO, will all elements included.
  • 50 points, based upon Mr. B.'s whims, regarding the overall look and eye appeal of the final products.
