GRAPHIC DESIGN: "The Typography Ad"

Premise: This is the first of a series of assignments which will help the students learn how to convey information in a properly laid out format.

Before you get started: You will be given an item which you will be "advertising." This will be a generic "thing." If it makes things easier, you can think of this as an advertisement similar to the "Milk" or "Beef" ad campaigns. The available "Things" are:

Air
Shoes
Bicycles
Circles
Grass
Water
Pencils
Hats
Forks
Salt
Clouds
Flags
Coffee
Paint
Underwear
String
Trees
Ladders
Sunsets
Staples
Chickens
Darkness
Mountains
Doors
Peace

The Advertisement: You will be creating this advertisement on a 8 1/2 inch WIDE by 11 inch TALL canvas in Photoshop. You will be following the rules below for the creation of your ad:

  1. Your goal is to create an EYE-CATCHING and appealing advertisement for your item.
  2. For the Background and Typography of your advertisement, you can only use THREE colors total. These can be black, white and gray or any other combination that you wish.
  3. You will need to come up with a "Catch Phrase" to help advertise your product. You catch phrase should be amusing in some way, but does not have to be all that effective. Some examples might be:
    • "Milk, it does a body good."
    • "Water, just try taking a shower without it."
    • "Hairbrushes, they aren't just for Prom Night any more."
    • "Flags, helping people figure out where the heck they are for over 2500 years!"
  4. You will include your "Catch Phrase" on your advertisement, laid out in a clever and eye-catching way. You can use multiple fonts and font sizes if you wish.
  5. If you wish to include other letters, phrases, quotes, etc. you can.
  6. You will incorporate a picture of your item somewhere on the advertisement, preferably neatly masked out of its background. Feel free to get creative with this. You could use a picture as a pattern overlay on your letters, you could use typography to outline the form and shape of your item, etc.
  7. You MUST leave a total of 50 percent of your advertising space COMPLETELY BLANK. Again, you can be creative with this in any way that you wish.
  8. Somewhere, in small letters at the bottom of the advertisement, please include an advertiser's statement, similar to the following: Brought to you by the National Avocado Grower's Association or Sponsored by The Society to Re-establish Pencil Superiority.
  9. When you have completed this assignment, save it as a JPEG and turn it into the DROPBOX, call it "lastname_typography_ad.jpg"

Grading: This assignment will be worth a total of 100 points:

  • 25 points for proper inclusion of a picture or image of your item.
  • 25 points for proper inclusion of a typographic representation of your "Catch Phrase."
  • 50 points, based upon Mr. B.'s whims, regarding the overall look and eye appeal of the final product.
