"The Basic Budget Project"

ASSIGNMENT: This assignment will involve students creating a basic budget for their time after high school. In addition to filling out the information for your budgets, but you will also need to RESEARCH AND DOCUMENT your findings regarding your budget. This is EXACTLY the process that a responsible person would complete before considering a move to a new area, a change in job, purchasing a house, etc.

THE BUDGET: The first day of class, you completed a form in which you outlined your expectations for the upcoming year after you graduate. You discussed your plans for work, education, living, food, etc. We are going to use this form as a basis for your budget. HERE IS THE LINK TO THE RESULTS OF THAT FORM. You will need to use this to complete the budget project below.

HOW TO CREATE YOUR BUDGET:  For this budget making experience, you will be putting your data onto a GOOGLE DOC to start. You will use this STUDENT BUDGET CALCULATOR as the basis for your budget. It has a large variety of categories that you will need to account for, as well as specific expenses that you will need to research and budget for.

REQUIRED ELEMENTS: You will need to do research into EVERY EXPENSE in each category that is listed in the budget calculator. To do this research, you will need to find and document EVIDENCE of the proper amount of each expense on your list. To do this, locate evidence online, document it on your GOOGLE DOC by linking your source material. If you DO NOT do this, you will not receive credit. Think of this as preliminary research that you need to complete to be able to be ready for your budget.

HOW TO RESEARCH: Google searches will help you to find prices for the category and area of the country that you wish to be living. If you will be on a campus, research the expenses for the college that you wish to attend. If you will be working, you need to find a position with a company and a salary, as well as hour that you can work. When it comes to your living situation, you will need to do research into rent prices, dorm prices, etc., as well as all of the other expenses that come with that, such as gas, electric, etc. For other bills, I need evidence of cost, such as internet service, cell phone services, streaming services, etc. When it comes to food, you will need to put together a complete shopping list for a week and document all prices, as well.

SUBMISSION OF PROJECT:You will need to share your Google Doc with Mr. B. for grading.

GRADING: This project will be worth a total of 50 points. You will be graded on the completion of all necessary budget elements, plus the documentation for all of your costs, plus the realistic expenses that you lay out in your budget.
